Writing Workshop: We have been working so hard on our non-fiction informational books. This is one of our first long term projects we have worked on which gets me pumped to begin teaching executive functioning skills. Students were responsible for looking through their table of contents and drafts and creating a "work completed" and "to do" section. Each time we work on our informational books they are in charge of knowing what they have to do and what they have already finished. Please chat with your son or daughter about how you stay organized and on top of your "to do list". We have talked about work deadlines and what we think that looks like for our parents as well as preparing to host a birthday party or holiday dinner and what that to do list looks like. As a 4th and 5th grade teacher, I know the importance of being able to organize materials as well as ideas. Being able to begin teaching these skills in third grade is crucial! Reading Workshop: We are continuing our study of Non-fiction reading, but have also begun a fun read aloud titled Frindle, by Andrew Clements. So far the kids are loving it! Please ask your son or daughter about it. We are making predictions, and working on our written reflection skills with this book. Andrew Clements is a favorite author and has many different realistic fiction books that are great for 3rd and 4th grade students. I am hoping that through Frindle, some students may want to read more of his titles. Reading for Meaning Reading non-fiction, expository text will be our challenge. I cannot stress the importance of this unit. Students are learning foundational skills they will take with them as they continue to grow and read more challenging texts in the years to come... | Did you hear about our Fun Friday?!?! Students earned some fun game time and had a blast playing. Since apparently I cannot leave any experience free from learning, we also worked through some social conflicts and thought together about the appropriate level of competition. I have a feeling these are things you work with your kids on as well ;) |
